Slack Wax is a blend of paraffin wax and oil made from petroleum crude oil. The percentage of oil in slack wax can range from 10% to 30%.
When Group I lubricant base oil is made, slack wax is also created. When producing Group I lubricant base oil, the feedstock must first undergo a solvent extraction procedure to remove aromatics; the end product is known as raffinate.
The raffinate is further diluted to reduce viscosity and enhance low-temperature filterability with a solvent such methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK). The oil is then cooled to between -10°C and -20°C. Crystals of wax will develop, precipitate, and be filtered out. Wax that is removed results in slack wax. It is usually used in the production of fully refined paraffin wax.
